SAMPLE PREPARATION
Metallography is the science of revealing and evaluating the internal structures of materials. It is one of the most important methods of materials research today, indispensable to the scientist as well as to the engineer.
More recently, advanced materials such as high tech metal alloys, ceramics, composites and polymers have appeared which made metallography become an increasingly vital part of modern industry.
Through a process of cutting, mounting, grinding and polishing, a smooth surface is obtained to reach the materials true structure. In order to achieve high preparation quality and reproducible results; a combination of “Right equipment, Correct preparation method and Right consumables” which we call “Total Preparation Solution”, is required.
WHAT IS METALLOGRAPHY ?
Metallography is the science of examining the microstructure of metals and alloys. This examination plays a critical role in understanding the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of materials, improving quality control processes, and optimizing production methods. Metallographic analysis is widely applied to enhance the reliability and durability of metals used in various industries.
Importance of Metallographic Examination
Metallographic analysis is conducted for the following key purposes:
Evaluation of Material Quality: Microstructural analysis provides information about grains, phases, precipitates, and defects within a material.
Optimization of Manufacturing Processes: Used to determine the effects of heat treatment and other production methods.
Failure Analysis: Applied to identify the causes of material defects or failures.
Research and Development: Contributes to the development of new materials and the improvement of existing ones.

Metallographic Sample Preparation Process
To obtain accurate results in metallographic examinations, samples must be properly prepared. This process consists of several essential steps:
1. Cutting
The sample must be carefully cut to allow proper preparation. It is crucial to prevent excessive heating and deformation during the cutting process.
2. Mounting
Small or irregularly shaped samples are embedded in resin for easy handling. Hot or cold mounting methods can be used.
3. Grinding and Polishing
Grinding and polishing remove surface scratches and imperfections to obtain a smooth surface for microscopic analysis. This process is performed using abrasives with different grit sizes and diamond suspensions.
4. Etching
Chemical or electrochemical etching is applied to reveal the microstructure of the sample. This process makes specific phases and grains visible using special reagents.
Metallographic Analysis Techniques
Metallography uses different analytical techniques to examine the internal structure of materials. The main methods include:
Optical Microscopy: Used to observe material structures at magnifications ranging from 50x to 1000x.
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM): Preferred for higher magnifications and surface analysis.
Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS): Used with SEM to analyze material composition.
X-ray Diffraction (XRD): Used to determine crystal structures.
